Introduction to Paint Driers
Driers are added to coating to bring about a physical change from liquid to solid state in a reasonable time. This change is effected by an Oxidating crosslinking mechanism accelerated by the metallic cation of the added metal soap.
There are two categories of driers: Those which promote oxidation are considered active driers, which includes cobalt, manganest, iron and cerium, and auxiliary driers like lead, Calcium, Zinc and Zirconium , which are used in conjuction with the active driers to improve the final properties of the coatings.
Driers are metallic salt solution of synthetic carboxylic Acid or Napthenic Acid. These metallic salts are characterised by controlled metal concentration. Octoates are lighter in colour. They compare in drying performance to naphthenates which are darker in colour.
