HOME ORAL CARE
BRUSHING
When? At least twice daily, morning and night. During sleep reduced muscular activity causes stagnation of food debris and accumulation of plaque over night. Mere rinsing is not an alternative to brushing.
How long? Around 3 minutes.
Which brush?
The technique of brushing is more important than the brush itself. Tooth brushes with many innovative designs and textures have flooded the market. Most long-term scientific studies comparing the conventional brushes with the newer novel designs, does not show any difference in efficiency. If your dental condition demands the use of a specific toothbrush your dentist will advise you accordingly.
Electrical brushes mimic the normal brushing action .Of course anybody can use them but their degree of efficiency is similar to a normal brush. They are especially recommended in handicapped patients or hospitalized patients.
Why tongue brushing?
The upper surface of the tongue is rough and harbors a great number of bacteria. This may be a source of mouth odour (halitosis). Tongue cleaning with a tongue cleaner or a toothbrush is recommended.
Which toothpaste (dentifrice)?
There are certain substances that are added to toothpaste to
Increase resistance of the teeth to decay ---------- FLUORIDES
Present progression of gum diseases ---------- TRICLOSAN, ZINC
CITRATE, PYROPHOSPHATES ETC.Combination toothpaste is also available.
For hypersensitive teeth ------ POTASSIUM / STRONTIUM SALTSDesensitizing toothpaste SODIUMCITRATE, FLORIIDE OR FORMALDEHYDE
Your dentist will recommend suitable toothpaste.
IMPROPER BRUSHING
This includes
Use of a hard / improper brush
Wrong techniqueIncreased frequency of brushingIncreased brushing time
Increased brushing forceThis leads to
Abrasion cavities at the junction of tooth and gums Trauma to the gums causing their shrinkage. Both these may cause severe sensitivity of teeth to hot and cold.
EVALUATION OF YOUR BRUSHING
Plaque disclosing solutions or tables are available. You can either chew on a tablet or apply the solution on the teeth just after brushing and flossing. It will temporarily stain / color any plaque you have left behind. These areas require better brushing
